Which healthcare UX design agencies in Europe should you look at?

Seven studios, three checks. A checklist: headquartered in Europe, a real health case study, design work not only code.

Short answer

For a HealthTech startup in Europe, the best healthcare UX design agency is one that can show you a real health case study, names the users it designed for and puts senior people on your account. Below are seven studios headquartered in Europe that pass that test, ours included, with a link to one health project each.

There are a lot of health apps. The IQVIA Institute counted 337,000 digital health apps in 2024. People who do download them don’t stay long either: a 2024 JMIR review found that a median of 70% of users stopped using lifestyle and mental health apps within the first 100 days.

So the studio you hire matters. Search “healthcare UX agency” and you’ll get long lists, mostly from agencies ranking themselves first. Fair enough, it’s their website. This is our version, with the rules written down.

Dtail Studio, the studio behind this blog, is on the list too. It sits in alphabetical order like everyone else, judged by the same rules.

How did we choose these studios?

Every studio had to pass three checks we could verify ourselves. We opened every page linked below in October 2026.

  • Headquartered in Europe.
Taken from the studio’s own site or a public company profile.

  • A real health case study on its own website.
A named client and a description of what was designed. A logo in a client strip didn’t count.

  • Design work, not only software builds.
Development shops can be excellent, but this list is for founders choosing a design partner.

What we didn’t do: rank by awards, take money or ask anyone for permission. Studios we couldn’t verify were left out, which says more about our research time than about their work.

Which healthcare UX design agencies in Europe should you look at?

These seven, in alphabetical order. Each one fits a different kind of founder.

  • Cyber-Duck, London.
A London UX studio. In its Healx case study, it improved the user experience of an AI-powered drug discovery platform, including a disease phenotype interface shown as a table view and a node schematic. Good for science-heavy B2B tools.

  • Designit, Copenhagen.
A global strategic design firm owned by Wipro. For Oslo University Hospital, it worked on reducing the time to diagnosis and designed materials that help patients understand their next steps. Good for hospital and service design at scale.

  • Dtail Studio, Barcelona.
That’s us, with a second office in California. We designed the app, platform and website for Elli Cares, an app for people living with cognitive impairment and their families, now used in 19 countries (case study). We also work with OXOS, whose portable X-ray system has FDA clearance. Good for Seed to Series A founders who want brand and product from one senior team.

  • Elsewhen, London.
A product studio of over 100 people based in London and across Europe. With Quit Genius, it built a digital coach to help people quit smoking. Good for funded teams that need design and engineering together.

  • Futurice, Helsinki.
A digital consultancy headquartered in Finland. With the North Karelia wellbeing services county Siun sote, it created a vision for future digital social services. Good for public health and care organisations.

  • ustwo, London.
A product studio with a dedicated health practice. For Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, it created a companion app for young patients that reduces stress and anxiety during their hospital stay. Good for patient-facing apps where emotion matters.

  • Zühlke, Zurich.
A large engineering and innovation consultancy, more than a studio. For the Singapore-ETH Centre, it turned a lifestyle coaching app into a more user-friendly 2.0 version for market launch. Good for regulated products that need heavy engineering.

Which type of studio fits a Seed to Series A startup?

Pick the smallest team that has done your kind of problem before, because at your stage you need seniority more than scale. Large consultancies are built for hospital groups and pharma budgets. Their best people are excellent, and they are often on someone else’s project.

Our view, and one a bigger agency won’t put in writing: if your designer can’t explain your product to an investor in two sentences, they haven’t understood it well enough to design it. Ask every studio on your shortlist to try in the first call. You’ll learn a lot from the attempt.

Two other things decide fit more than the logo wall:

  • Who your users are.
A studio that has designed for clinicians may not know what tired caregivers need, and the other way round.

  • What you need next.
A pilot, a raise and a hospital tender need different things. Our post on how to choose a HealthTech design agency has the questions to ask.

Four steps for reading a health case study: who were the users, what changed, what evidence, who did the work.

Four questions for any health case study, ours included. Framework by Dtail Studio.

How do you read a health case study?

Read it for evidence of thinking, not for the screenshots. Every agency can make a phone mockup look calm. The figure below shows the four questions we’d ask of any case study, including ours.

If a case study answers all four, the studio can probably explain your product too. If it answers none, you’ve found a nice portfolio piece. Our checklist for vetting a design agency before you sign goes further, with references and reviews.

How we’d approach it

If you’re shortlisting studios, we’d help you make the comparison fair, even if we’re on the list. In practice:

  1. Write a one-page brief.
Who the users are, what has to be true by your next milestone and what you’ve already tried.

  2. Shortlist three studios with health work.
Use the three checks above, then open two case studies from each.

  3. Run the same first call with each.
Same brief, same questions, same ask: explain our product back to us.

  4. Call one past client per studio.
Five minutes, one question: would you hire them again?

Bring your brief, your current product or prototype and the date of your next milestone. Here’s how we work, if you want to compare us on the same terms.

FAQ

Is a healthcare UX design agency in Europe cheaper than one in the US?
Often, but compare senior hours, not day rates. A cheaper team that needs twice as many rounds isn’t cheaper.

Should a startup hire a big consultancy?
Only if you need their scale or their engineering. Most Seed to Series A teams get more from a smaller senior studio.

Do I need a studio with medical device experience?
Only if your product is or may become a medical device. Your regulatory adviser decides that, and the studio should work alongside them.

Why is Dtail Studio on its own list?
Because HealthTech is our largest focus and we pass the same three checks. We placed ourselves alphabetically and linked our work so you can judge it.

Try this today

Open one health case study from each studio on your shortlist and score it against the four questions in the figure: who the users were, what changed, what evidence was shown and who did the work. Ten minutes per studio. The lowest score goes, however good the pictures are.

If you’d like a second opinion on your shortlist, with or without us on it, we’re happy to talk it through.
